Steps

  1. Cook onion wedges in 1 c water mixed with 1 / 2 t salt until tender
  2. Covered
  3. Reserve 1 c onion water for sauce
  4. Drain
  5. Melt 4 t butter
  6. Stir in 2 t flour and cook over medium heat
  7. Stirring
  8. For five minutes
  9. Slowly add reserved onion water and whisk until smooth
  10. Add pepper sauce
  11. Whisk together: light cream and egg
  12. Add a little of the onion sauce and whisk to warm the cream mixture
  13. "add remaining onion sauce and continue whisking over low heat
  14. Until its the consistency of heavy cream"
  15. Be careful not to overcook the egg
  16. Toss sauce with onions and put in a shallow casserole
  17. Greased with softened butter
  18. Top with cubed bread
  19. Cheddar and romano cheeses
  20. Tossed with 8 t melted butter
  21. Bake at 350 for 30 - 35 minutes
  22. Until top is golden
