  1. Prewash 8 pint-sized wide mouth canning jars in hot
  2. Soapy water
  3. Rinse well
  4. Dry and let them come to room temperat ure
  5. Grease insides of jar well
  6. Beat together butter and half of sugar until fluffy
  7. Add eggs and remaining sugar
  8. Vanilla and applesauce
  9. Sift dry ingredients together and add to the applesauce mixture a little at a time: beat well after each addition
  10. Pour one cup of batter into each jar and carefully remove any batter from
  11. The rims
  12. Place jars in a preheated 325-degree oven and bake for 40 minutes
  13. While cakes are baking
  14. Bring a saucepan of water to a boil and carefully
  15. Add jar lids
  16. Remove pan from heat and keep lids hot until ready to use
  17. When the cakes have finished baking
  18. Remove jars from oven
  19. Make sure jar
  20. Rims are clean
  21. Place lids on jars
  22. And screw rings on tightly
  23. Jars will seal as they cool
  24. Cakes will
  25. Slide right out when ready to serve
