  1. Heat oven to 350f degrees degrees
  2. Mix flour
  3. Brown sugar
  4. Cocoa
  5. Baking soda and salt with fork in ungreased square pan
  6. 8 x 8 x 2 inches
  7. Mix in remaining ingredients except chocolate chips
  8. Sprinkle chocolate chips over batter
  9. Bake until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean
  10. 35-40 minutes
  11. Sprinkle with powdered sugar if desired
  12. Cake can be mixed in bowl if desired
  13. Cut ice cream lengthwise into halves
  14. Place one half on plate
  15. Freeze
  16. Return remaining ice cream to freezer for another use
  17. Prepare cake as directed except
  18. Mix in bowl and grease and flour pan
  19. Bake as directed
  20. Cool
  21. Cover cookie sheet with aluminum foil
  22. Place cake on cookie sheet
  23. Place ice cream on cake 1 inch from one side
  24. Trim the other side of cake around ice cream
  25. Leaving a 1 inch edge
  26. Freeze cake and ice cream
  27. Heat oven to 500 degrees
  28. Beat egg white and cream of tartar until foamy
  29. Beat in brown sugar
  30. 1 tablespoons at a time
  31. Continue beating until stiff and glossy
  32. Working quickly
  33. Completely cover cake and ice cream with meringue
  34. Sealing it to foil on cookie sheet
  35. Bake on lowest oven rack until meringue is light brown
  36. 3-5 minutes
  37. Trim foil to edge of meringue
  38. Transfer cake to serving plate
  39. Cut into 6 slices
  40. Cut each slice into halves
  41. Serve immediately
