  1. Snap off tough ends of asparagus
  2. Remove scales from stalks with a vegetable peeler
  3. If desired
  4. Cook asparagus in boiling salted water to cover 6-8 minutes or until crisp-tender
  5. Drain
  6. Rinse with cold water
  7. Drain well
  8. Place asparagus in a large heavy-duty
  9. Zip-top plastic bag
  10. Combine sugar and next 3 ingredients
  11. Pour over asparagus
  12. Seal bag securely
  13. And gently turn to coat
  14. Marinate in refrigerator for 1 hour
  15. Turning once
  16. Remove asparagus from marinade
  17. Reserving marinade
  18. Place asparagus on a serving platter
  19. And drizzle with reserved marinade
  20. Sprinkle asparagus with toasted pecans and pepper
