  1. Melt butter in a heavy large dutch oven over medium high heat
  2. Add apples and onion and saute until tender
  3. About 10 minutes
  4. Stir in cabbage and stir frequently for about 8 minutes
  5. Stir in sugar
  6. Vinegar
  7. Salt
  8. Cloves
  9. And allspice
  10. Cover and cook until cabbage is crisp-tender about 10 minutes
  11. Uncover and add red wine and jelly and cook 5 minutes more
  12. Add salt and pepper to taste if desired
