  1. Heat oven to 350 degrees
  2. Butter 2 quart casserole
  3. Combine potatoes
  4. Salt
  5. Pepper
  6. Onion
  7. Egg and 3 ounces gruyere cheese
  8. Heat milk and cream to boiling in saucepan
  9. Combine with potato mixture
  10. Place in casserole
  11. Sprinkle with remaining cheese and dot with butter
  12. Bake 1 hour
  13. If top not browned
  14. Broil until lightly brown
