  1. Line an 11 x 17- inch jelly-roll pan with parchment and butter the paper
  2. Preheat oven to 350 f
  3. In a large bowl
  4. Cream the butter and 1 cup of the sugar until fluffy and light
  5. Add the egg yolks and beat until very light in texture
  6. Stir in the flour
  7. Baking powder
  8. And milk
  9. Spread the batter in the prepared pan
  10. Sprinkle half of the nuts on top
  11. In a medium-sized bowl
  12. Beat the egg whites and the remaining sugar until stiff
  13. To form a meringue
  14. Spread the meringue over the batter
  15. Top with the remaining nuts
  16. Bake for 25 minutes
  17. Or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean
  18. Remove from the pan
  19. Peel off the parchment paper
  20. And cool
  21. Cut the cake into two equal halves
  22. To prepare the filling
  23. In a large bowl
  24. Whip the cream and sugar until stiff peaks form
  25. Spread half of the whipped cream over one half of the torte
  26. Meringue--side up
  27. Cover with the other half of the torte
  28. Meringue--side up
  29. Before serving
  30. Top with the remaining whipped cream and the chopped nuts
  31. Garnish with strawberries
  32. If desired
