  1. Sift together flour
  2. Brown sugar
  3. Baking powder
  4. Soda and salt
  5. Blend in butter until mixture resembles coarse meal and stir in whole wheat flour
  6. Bran
  7. Walnuts and raisins
  8. In a small bowl
  9. Whisk together lemon rind
  10. Egg and buttermilk
  11. Add to flour mixture and stir with a fork until it just forms a sticky but manageable dough
  12. Knead dough lightly on a floured surface for 30 seconds and pat gently into a inch thick round
  13. Cut out rounds with a 2 2 inch cutter dipped in flour and arrange on a buttered baking sheet
  14. Form scraps into a ball
  15. Reshape and cut more rounds
  16. Brush tops with egg wash and bake in the middle of a preheated 390f oven for 15-17 minutes
  17. Or until golden
  18. Serve warm
