Cooking in Ancient Greece

The course takes place in a 300 year old olive grove, 5 km from the city of Chania. It may be available on request - when time permits. A brief introduction to food, cooking methods and trade routes of Classical Greece will be followed by a dipping back into its cuisine. Using Athenaeus’ «Deipnosophistai» * and archaeological research data as inspiration, the class will enjoy learning how to reproduce ancient Greek recipes both in modern kitchens and according to experimental archaeology. After the cooking the team will eat what it has been prepared.

This was an amazing experience. Marianna was a wonderful hostess and shared with us many many traditional Cretan recipes that we cooked in an outdoor oven. Her wealth of knowledge about ancient Cretan cooking only added to this incredible four hour class. We left with lots of food and wonderful memories of our time with Mariana. If you love to cook and eat-You do not want to miss this while you are in Crete!!

We immensely enjoyed our evening with Mariana. The atmosphere of dining in an olive grove was a truly unique experience. Not only was the food delicious but Mariana is extremely knowledgeable about the culture and history surrounding the meal that she had planned. Mariana is a fascinating dinner host that we enjoyed very much getting know and learning from while dining on traditional Ancient Greek food. Great way to learn more about a city that you are visiting, highly recommend!
