This dining experience takes you back in the time to the Malacca story and Portugal's influence in Southeast Asia. We will discover how Portugal changed the course of history through conquest, intermarriage, ingredients introduced from the New World and cooking methods infused in Southeast Asian cuisine. In this experience we will be be dining on Malay cuisine, which is the indigenous people from Malaysia and Singapore. Malay cuisine uses Thai and Indonesian cooking principles with Chinese, Indian, Middle East, Portuguese and Dutch influences. It is considered the underdog of Southeast Asian cuisine and one of the earlier fusion foods. Dishes in this experience may not be available in local restaurants in Lisbon or in Portugal. In keeping with serving traditional dishes, we may not be able to cater to some diet preferences and restrictions. However, Thursday experiences may be catered for vegetarians upon request. Drinks and alcohol will be provided but feel free to bring your favourite wine along. Originally from Singapore, Sophian first visited Lisbon hoping to learn more about the Southeast Asian connection with Portugal. Upon realising not much was mentioned, he is advocating to share this piece of the puzzle, bringing the story back to Portugal. The Portuguese also had significant impact in culture and foods but little is known in Portugal. Sophian has his own YouTube channel entitled "Weave The Story" which shares stories behind dishes we cook and personal food memories. This experience takes place in Sophian's apartment located in Intendente. Known as the Moorish ghetto, this area has seen a transformation in recent years and it is an upcoming area with great cafes, restaurants and history. You will get to enjoy the view of Lisbon from the apartment.
